Radiation Protection Service Research & Development

The Group has a research theme of investigating the radiation doses received by different patient Radiation Protection categories and staff.

Radiation Record Book

The Department of Health is funding the Group to investigate the likely success of the UK population complying with the issue of Radiation Record Books as occurs elsewhere in Europe. A selected patient population group, initially in the Southampton area, is being given  record books and an assessment is being undertaken to measure both compliance and radiation doses for particular clinical presentations.

Optimisation of Radiation Shielding in X-Ray Room Design

A recent project has looked at ways of optimising the radiation shielding in x-ray room construction, taking into account the restriction of dose and economic factors, and focusing on CT equipment. An anthropomorphic phantom was used to simulate a patient undergoing routine x-ray examinations and the scatter measured. The attenuation properties of some building materials were assessed and the effect of workload on the assessment of shielding requirements was investigated. Papers based on this work are in preparation.

Research Support

In addition to the above projects, the Group assists other researchers with advice and support relating to radiological aspects of their research.
