Osteoporosis Centre Research & Development

The Osteoporosis Centre undertakes both commercially sponsored clinical trials, research of their own and helps co-ordinate NHS and University research projects involving investigations into Osteoporosis. 

The staff are also very involved with teaching and health promotion advice for patients and colleagues and have good links with the local and National Osteoporosis Society (NOS).Osteoporosis Centre

Principal Research Areas

  1. SOUTHAMPTON WOMEN'S SURVEY:

  • 1000 babies have now had DXA scans of total body and spine.

  • 800 4-year-olds have now had DXA scans of total body, spine and hip, recruitment continues.

  • PQCT measurements of the tibia have commenced with the 6-year-olds

  1. VIDEO study, Vitamin D evaluation in Osteoarthritis of the knee. DXA scans of sub-tibia plateau, total body, spine and hip.

  2. IBD study, DXA scans of total body, spine, hip and IVA and ultrasound measurement of the os calcis.

  3. METABOLIC study DXA scans of total body to look at body composition.

  4. FRAN study analysing fingernail clippings to compare with BMD measurements.

  5. NYCOMED study 3-year study comparing 2 sequences of licensed osteoporosis treatments. DXA scan of spine hip and forearm.

  6. SCOOP study looking at the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of screening for osteoporosis in older women for the prevention of fractures.

  7. HERTFORDSHIRE COHORT study looking at healthy ageing, DXA scans of total body, spine and hip.

  8. IBIS study, oncology study, DXA scans of spine and hip.

  9. OPTION study, DXA scans of spine and hips.
