Non-Ionising Radiation Support Service

The Non-Ionising Radiation Support Service is responsible for providing advice and training on safety in non-ionising radiations including lasers, ultraviolet and blue-light phototherapy and ultrasound.

Lasers

Laser safety advice is provided to users of medical and cosmetic lasers within Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and to other clients in the area.

We can offer the services of an accredited Laser Protection Advisor to users of lasers and intense pulsed light in the private sector to comply with the Care Standards Act.

A laser safety course covering the "Core of Knowledge" from the MHRA's Guidance on the safe use of lasers in medical and dental practice, including intense pulsed light systems, is run regularly for doctors, nurses, theatre staff and others using medical or cosmetic lasers.  Bespoke training is also possible

 Ultraviolet phototherapy

Scientific support and quality assurance service is provided to the phototherapy unit in Dermatology, and measurements and advice are offered to other users of ultraviolet or blue-light phototherapy. Scientists are also working with dermatologists to provide photo-sensitivity testing for patients who have abnormal skin sensitivity to light.

Ultrasound

Image and Doppler quality assurance assessments are made on diagnostic ultrasound equipment and output power can be measured on therapeutic and diagnostic ultrasound equipment.
