Osteoporosis Centre

The Osteoporosis Centre provides bone density, body composition and vertebral assessment scans for in and out patients, as well as private patients. The centre currently receives approximately 4000 Osteoporosis Centre DXA Scan referrals a year. Patients are referred medical staff from within the Trust, General Practitioners in Primary Care Trusts, out of area referrals (e.g. Winchester, Salisbury) and private patients. The waiting list varies from between 6-10 weeks. The scanning time for the patient is approximately 5-10 minutes. There are two high specification devices within the Department and all staff operating the equipment are fully trained and competent to national standards.

The Osteoporosis Centre has regular visits from nurses and other health care professionals, which it welcomes. The team here encourages public involvement and have carried out patient satisfaction surveys, and an audit of acceptable out of hours scanning times. There is always available a selection of free booklets and information sheets about Osteoporosis, diet and life style, exercise advice, etc. Individuals within the team are regularly involved in teaching, and are always available, at notice, to appear at venues for talks. The osteoporosis centre is always working towards improvements, and hopes to implement a falls assessment liaison service.
